Meet the Team: Tess Larsen

Literacy programs intern Tess Larsen is a rising senior at Blacksburg High School and has been working at the LNRV Learning Center since May 2023. Although that's when her "real" job started with us, she's been volunteering with our Blacksburg Family READS program for many years! We asked Tess to share more about her interest in adult literacy and her goals for the future and here's what she had to say:

What is your favorite thing about working at Literacy NRV?

I adore the people at Literacy NRV. It’s clear just from watching our volunteers and staff interact with the students that there is a deep level of community and support. Through working in the office and volunteering at classes, I’ve met so many people who have not only exposed me to different cultures but also have become wonderful friends.

What are your goals for the next few months/years?

Next year, I will graduate high school and begin my college career. At college, I hope to study nonprofit work - largely inspired by my time interning at Literacy NRV! While I’ve always been interested in volunteering, being able to see our real-world impact at Literacy NRV has allowed me to explore this passion in depth and better understand how I hope to pursue it in the future.

How has your role evolved since you joined Literacy NRV?

I first started at Literacy NRV as a volunteer intern, and mostly helped out with around-the-office tasks. However, my position has since grown to be a paid position! Alongside tasks with social media, photographing events, and entering student/volunteer information, I now am in charge of delivering online curriculum to students improving their workforce skills.
