Program Coordinator Anne Abbott has been a member of the Literacy NRV staff since January 2019. Anne started with LNRV as a part-time instructor for our Family READS family literacy classes. She's now expanded her responsibilities to include Family READS program management and teaches our Skill Up BRP English literacy class (in partnership with Blacksburg Refugee Partnership) four mornings a week.
We asked Anne to share some of the reasons that she loves working at Literacy NRV:
What is your favorite thing about working at Literacy NRV?
The people! I am so grateful to work with the students, volunteers and staff of LNRV. My life has been immeasurably enriched by meeting and getting to know the amazing people in the LNRV family. The determination and drive of the students, the kindness and encouragement of the volunteers, the dedication and thoughtfulness of the staff....it's an uplifting and beautiful thing to witness.
How has your role evolved since you joined Literacy NRV?
I joined LNRV in 2008 as a volunteer tutor and have had quite a few students over the years, mostly in basic literacy. In 2018, I volunteered in a new LNRV family literacy program for ESOL learners called Family READS. I really only went to help a refugee family feel comfortable in the classes but quickly discovered that I loved the whole program and its mission. In 2019, I became the coordinator of Family READS and officially joined the staff of LNRV. From there, bit by bit, my role expanded...in addition to family literacy, I now also support the English language learners of the Blacksburg Refugee Partnership.
What is something you are passionate about?
Volunteering with the Blacksburg Refugee Partnership is an essential part of my life. I have met so many incredible and inspiring people through this work of resettlement...and have learned and grown in ways I would never have imagined. I am so fortunate to be involved with these two remarkable organizations. Not sure how I got to be so lucky!
